DEDICATED XL FUSED DISCONNECT SWITCHES – WHEN TO USE
Connection of 1 or 2 XL modules to customer electrical systems is very common, particularly when XL modules are being connected locally to inductive loads. In these cases, new fused disconnect switches are connected in parallel to the electrical system with one (1) 100A fuse connected to 1 XL module or a 200A fuse connected to 2 XL modules.
As discussed earlier, dedicated XL subpanels with breakers are required when connecting 3 or more XL modules in facility location. Like dedicated XL subpanels, the same options apply when connecting XL Disconnect Switches in parallel to existing facility electrical distribution systems which include any one or all of the following:
- Central MDP Install: XL Disconnect Switch connected to spare or new main breaker located in Main Distribution Panel (MDP).
- Central MDP Install: XL Disconnect Switch connected to bus taps drilled in Main Distribution Panel (MDP).
- Distributed Subpanel Install: XL Disconnect Switch connected to spare or new breaker located in an existing distributed subpanel closer to facility loads.
- Distributed Subpanel Install: XL Disconnect Switch connected to bus taps drilled in an existing distributed subpanel closer to facility loads.
- Local Controller Install: XL Disconnect Switch connected to spare or new breaker installed in existing Controller, Motor Control Center (MCC), Variable Frequency Drive (VFD), etc.
- Local Controller Install: XL Disconnect Switch connected to bus taps drilled in existing Controller, Motor Control Center (MCC), Variable Frequency Drive (VFD), etc.
- Local Inductive Load Install: XL Disconnect Switch connected to a new breaker installed on the line side of inductive equipment.
- Local Inductive Load Install: XL Disconnect Switch connected to bus taps drilled on the line side of inductive equipment.
