DEDICATED XL BREAKER SUBPANELS - WHEN TO USE

(3) XL 480V Units and Dedicated XL Subpanel Connected to an 800A MDP via bus taps which powers a large forced air handling system in a 12 Story Bldg.

Connection of multiple XL modules to customer electrical systems is common. In these cases, dedicated XL breaker subpanels are connected in parallel to the electrical system with one (1) 100A breaker for every XL 480V module.

If the XL subpanel is being connected to a spare or new breaker in existing electrical system gear, then a main breaker is not required for the dedicated XL subpanel.

If the XL subpanel is being connected to the customer’s electrical system via bus taps, then a main breaker is always installed in the dedicated XL subpanel which is sized to accommodate the # and model types of XL modules being connected.

XL subpanels are connected in parallel to existing facility electrical distribution systems in any one or all of the following manners:

  • Central MDP Install: XL Subpanel connected to spare or new main breaker located in Main Distribution Panel (MDP).
  • Central MDP Install: XL Subpanel connected to bus taps drilled in Main Distribution Panel (MDP).
  • Distributed Subpanel Install: XL Subpanel connected to spare or new breaker located in an existing distributed subpanel closer to facility loads.
  • Distributed Subpanel Install: XL Subpanel connected to bus taps drilled in an existing distributed subpanel closer to facility loads.
  • Local Controller Install: XL Subpanel connected to spare or new breaker installed in existing Controller, Motor Control Center (MCC), Variable Frequency Drive (VFD), etc.
  • Local Controller Install: XL Subpanel connected to bus taps drilled in existing Controller, Motor Control Center (MCC), Variable Frequency Drive (VFD), etc.
  • Local Inductive Load Install: XL Subpanel connected to a new breaker installed on the line side of inductive equipment.
  • Local Inductive Load Install: XL Subpanel connected to bus taps drilled on the line side of inductive equipment.
